What was the Redwood Health Information Collaborative?
The Collaborative was formed in December 2005 as a community-based steering committee to investigate health information exchange opportunities in the rural, sparsely populated Lake and Mendocino county region of Northern California. The project was initiated by an InformationLinks grant from Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to the Mendocino County Department of Public Health. The specific focus of the grant was to allow Public Health to participate in and benefit from a local health information exchange. The work products developed by the Collaborative are listed below.

After completing its grant funded deliverables in March 2007, the Steering Committee continued meeting monthly as community volunteers in an ongoing investigation of health information exchange policy and technology. The Collaborative was led jointly by the Mendocino County Department of Public Health and Redwood MedNet, a community-based non-profit Health Information Exchange. The monthly meetings hosted by the Collaborative were open to the public. The meetings provided presentations from regional and national experts in health information technology and policy. Visitors from other health information exchange projects in California and elsewhere were frequent attendees. After more than two years of webinars, the project closed in December 2009.

RWJF Deliverables
During the grant funded early phase of the project, the Collaborative developed answers to four questions. Each question was answered via an open community investigation process that produced the following documents. These documents were developed as tools that can be repurposed as needed by other community-based Health Information Exchange projects.

  2. What is the sustainable business model for a Health Information Exchange?

  3. What governance model is best to operate a Health Information Exchange?
Governance Options   [ MAR-07, EDITED BY CAROL MORDHORST AND WILL ROSS ]

  4. What legal and policy issues must be addressed to launch and operate a Health Information Exchange?   [ DEVELOPED BY ALLEN BRISKEN, DAVIS WRIGHT TREMAINE ]
Policy Template   [ JUN-06, FROM CONNECTING FOR HEALTH ]
